Better Telco Solutions helped SportsPower Bunbury overcome a failed NBN fibre installation by identifying and preparing an existing telecommunications pathway, avoiding thousands of dollars in unnecessary infrastructure works and delivering fast, reliable fibre with minimal disruption to business operations.

Project Overview

Better Telco Solutions (BTS) helped SportsPower Bunbury overcome a failed NBN fibre installation by identifying an existing telecommunications pathway that had been overlooked during the initial assessment, avoiding potentially thousands of dollars in unnecessary infrastructure works.

SportsPower Bunbury is a locally owned sporting goods retailer operated by Kellie and Ian, servicing the Bunbury community with sporting footwear, apparel and equipment. Like most modern retail businesses, reliable internet connectivity is essential for its daily operations, communications and business systems.

After experiencing slow internet speeds and regular dropouts on its ageing Fibre to the Node (FTTN) connection, SportsPower moved its telecommunications services to BTS. Our team recommended upgrading to Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) to eliminate the deteriorating copper connection and provide a faster, more reliable service.

However, when NBN attended to complete the upgrade, the installation proved more complicated than expected.

What initially appeared to require extensive new infrastructure works became an opportunity for BTS to demonstrate the value of having a local telecommunications provider who could investigate the problem firsthand.

The Challenge: A Fibre Upgrade With Unexpected Costs

SportsPower's existing FTTN connection relied on ageing copper infrastructure, resulting in poor internet speeds and ongoing dropouts that were affecting the business.

While the upgrade to FTTP would resolve these issues, NBN was unable to complete the initial installation due to difficulties establishing a suitable fibre pathway into the tenancy.

The proposed solution was to create an entirely new pathway from the opposite end of the building, running through two neighbouring tenancies before reaching SportsPower's communications area.

This would have involved significant additional cabling and infrastructure works, disruption to neighbouring businesses and potentially thousands of dollars in additional costs for Kellie and Ian.

For many businesses, this is where an NBN upgrade can become frustrating. While a telecommunications provider can arrange the service, additional infrastructure requirements within a building can leave the customer responsible for finding contractors, coordinating works and covering unexpected costs.

Before recommending that SportsPower proceed with the proposed works, BTS wanted to establish whether there was a better solution.

The Local Advantage

As a Bunbury based telecommunications provider, BTS has local technicians who can attend customer premises, investigate infrastructure challenges and work directly with NBN to resolve installation issues.

Rather than accepting the proposed pathway and passing the additional costs on to Kellie and Ian, BTS arranged for our technicians to meet NBN onsite during a subsequent visit.

The aim was to understand exactly how NBN intended to bring the fibre into the tenancy and assess whether the existing building infrastructure could provide a more practical solution.

During this investigation, BTS discovered something that had been missed during the original assessment.

The existing telecommunications lead in actually entered through the floor directly into SportsPower's communications area.

This meant there was already a potential pathway for the new fibre connection, eliminating the need to run cabling through two neighbouring businesses.

What could have become a costly and disruptive installation was now a much more straightforward project.

The BTS Solution

Having identified the existing lead in pathway, BTS prepared the infrastructure to accommodate the new fibre connection.

Our technicians completed the necessary works to make the existing pathway suitable for the installation, allowing the fibre to be delivered directly into SportsPower's communications area.

BTS then coordinated NBN's return to site to complete the fibre installation using the existing pathway, avoiding the need for extensive new cabling and infrastructure works.

Once NBN had completed its part of the installation, BTS returned to manage the cutover from the old copper service to the new FTTP connection.

Our technicians reconnected SportsPower's equipment, tested the connection and confirmed everything was operational before the store opened for the day.

Throughout the process, Kellie and Ian had one local point of contact managing the technical requirements, coordinating with NBN and ensuring the upgrade was completed with minimal disruption to their business.

The Result: Better Connectivity Without Unnecessary Costs

SportsPower Bunbury now has a fast, reliable FTTP NBN connection, removing the ageing copper infrastructure that had contributed to its previous internet issues.

More importantly, the business avoided potentially thousands of dollars in unnecessary infrastructure works and the disruption of running new cabling through neighbouring tenancies.

By investigating the existing infrastructure rather than simply proceeding with the initial recommendation, BTS was able to deliver a more practical and cost effective solution.

Kellie and Ian also avoided the challenge of coordinating multiple contractors or navigating the technical requirements of the installation themselves.

From recommending the right NBN service through to investigating the failed installation, preparing the existing pathway and completing the final cutover, BTS managed the process from start to finish.

More Than Just an Internet Provider

An NBN service qualification can tell you whether fibre is available at an address. It cannot always tell you what infrastructure exists within a building or whether the proposed installation approach is the most practical solution.

That is where having a local telecommunications provider makes a difference.

For SportsPower Bunbury, BTS did more than arrange an internet upgrade. Our technicians attended site, worked directly with NBN and identified an existing pathway that had been overlooked, saving the customer from potentially significant additional costs.

Rather than leaving Kellie and Ian to manage the problem themselves, BTS took responsibility for finding the right solution and seeing the installation through to completion.

Because better telecommunications is not just about providing a faster connection. It's about having someone local who can turn up, understand the problem and find a better way to get the job done.
